B10U EXTRA Wins The Sigi Schmid AYSO Open Cup

Region 97 EXTRA B10U won a second tournament in the month of June.

After winning the Newport Mesa Cup against CalSouth Clubs, Coach Wilson and the boys traveled to Temecula to participate in The Sigi Schmid AYSO Open Cup.

Sigi Schmid passed away earlier this year at the age of 65. Besides being the winning-est coach in MLS, Sigi was also a player in the inaugural AYSO season in 1964. AYSO renamed the National Open Cup to honor him and inspire our youths in their soccer journey.

More than 130 AYSO teams gather at Galway Downs in Temecula which hosted the tournament on June 22-23, 2019. Coach Wilson entered the EXTRA team into the club division, which had all AYSO United teams in it.

The first match on Saturday was against United, Antelope Valley. Wyatt kept a clean sheet for the first half and scored two in the second. Danny and Hudson each added two goals to cruise to an early win, 0-9.

In the afternoon, the boys played against  United Arizona, winning 5-2. Keaton blasted a half line shot into the upper corner for an amazing goal. Leading 2-0-0 in the standing, the boys seemed invincible.

A coaching decision nearly led to a loss on Sunday. In his own words, Coach Trevor Wilson said "We came out a little sluggish after a long night of partying at the bowling alley, until 11pm. Parents and kids were having a blast off the field and some family and friend bonding. Bad coaching move having the boys up past curfew. LOL"

The team was anchored by great defense from Keaton, Charlie and Ellis, with great mid field support from Sam and Beckett. "We managed to hang in to a 1-0 win over Pacific United. Conner scored the lone goal for the lightning. And, keeper Evan saved the team with a 4th quarter penalty kick diving save. Wyatt and Evan combined for a clean sheet which sealed the tournament 1st place finish."

The last game was a formality as the team enjoyed one last match, highlighted by Evan's two goals leading to a 2-1 victory and another 1st place trophy.
