Coach Trevor Wilson and the Region 97 Boys 10U EXTRA Team won the Newport Mesa Cup on May 26th, 2019. The Newport Mesa Cup is sponsored by the Newport Mesa Strikers club and primarily includes clubs led by professional coaches and staff like the LA Galaxy.
Team Lightning led throughout the tournament, winning all four matches. They first had to beat Laguna FC and LA Galaxy in pool play to earn home team advantage in the finals. Victory was especially sweet for Even, Wyatt, and Danny who shared keeper duties and allowed only one goal during the competition. The final match against the Huntington Beach Patedores was especially challenging, as the team played a man short. The game was hard fought and the score was close, but the boys persisted in spite of their handicap to win 1-0.
The all-volunteer Region 97 AYSO EXTRA program provides a club like experience at a fraction of the cost, has had other tournament successes this year against clubs. This was the second time Trevor and team earned first place in a Cal South sanctioned tournament. And Region 97 wasn't the only winning AYSO Team in the competition, in fact AYSO teams nearly won each divisions they entered. AYSO teams participating in the tournament included:
AYSO United competes in USSF CalSouth league and tournaments while remaining true to the principles which makes AYSO unique.
The AYSO Region 97 EXTRA Program is a year round program led by Tom McDaniel and Jeff Grant. Tryouts are held in April. For more information, click here:
