Verrall family celebrates Mother’s Day through service
Sometimes parents inspire their children, sometimes the child inspires the parent and in the case of the Verrall family, they inspire each other. When the call for volunteers went out in 2015, mother Amy responded by earning her coaching certificate and participating in her daughters soccer journey. Through her enthusiastic coaching, dozens of girls learned not only how to play soccer, but life lessons in competition and sportsmanship.
Daughter Elizabeth, affectionately called “Bug” by everyone who knows her, learned an early lesson in service and leadership from her mother. In turn, she applied that lesson when she decided to become a referee. Besides completing on-line and in-person training, Bug had to overcome her natural shyness and learn to be decisive and assertive. She also received a stylish uniform, referee swag and valuable service hours to complete service requirements at her school. Bug was even recognized at the end of the Fall 2018 season as Rookie Youth Referee of the Year!
Amy went through the same training, but her fear of dealing with “enthusiastic” coaches like herself kept her away from the touch line until she witnessed her 13 year old competently and confidentially refereeing the game she had come to know and love.
This Mother’s Day eve, mother and daughter finally shared an assignment as assistant referees for a semi-final 10U match. On this day there were two winning teams, one on the field and the other sharing the touchline and a passion for service.
