Thank you for volunteering with AYSO Region 97!   All coaches, referees and administrators are volunteers, and your community service enables the youth in our area the affordable opportunity to play the game of soccer, learn good sportsmanship, and build new friendships.

AYSO has developed special training that helps parents who may have little or no soccer experience to quickly gain the age-appropriate skills they need to be effective coaches and referees.  This ensures that each community AYSO program:  1) creates a safe environment for the children being served; 2) abides by the American Youth Soccer Organization philosophies; and 3) provides adequate training for volunteers to facilitate a great experience.

It only takes a few hours to become qualified as an introductory-level coach or referee.  But if you're not able to commit even that much time, there are many small jobs you can help with, including field set-up or team parent.  Even a couple of hours each season are an important contribution to your team and Region.

All volunteers must complete the following two easy steps:

  1. Register and fill out a volunteer form at www.newportayso.com (required each season).
  2. Complete the following three online modules at https://aysou.org (required once in a lifetime) using the same user ID/password from step #1.  Courses can be located in the "My Courses" tab.
    1. AYSO's Safe Haven
    2. CDC:  Concussion Course
    3. AYSO's Summary of the Laws of the Game

To become an AYSO coach:
You must be certified at the age level you are coaching.  Classes build on one another.  As an example, if you are planning to coach a Core 8U team and have never coached in AYSO before, you must complete the certification class for 6U and 8U before the commencement of the season.  Basic courses are completed online while higher age levels additionally require in-person training/field work.
