Father's Day with the Wrubels

Like a lot of other Father and sons, you might find the Wrubel boys wearing matching outfits and creating memories this weekend. But, if you want to find them, look no further than a soccer field; they’re refereeing.

Tim and son Owen are familiar sights in the region. They are last season’s leading adult and youth referees with 41 and 12 matches respectively. And, Tim is the region’s all time leader on MatchTrak, our referee scheduling system, with a whopping 282 documented matches. That’s well over 500 hours spent in service to the youth in our community.

But it wasn’t always this way. At Owen’s first practice, the coach asked the assembled parents for volunteers and Tim slowly raised his hand. After all, what did he know? His total knowledge of soccer was based on watching the 2002 FIFA World Cup on T.V., while living in China! But, Tim thought, how hard could it be? You blow the whistle and point at things, right? One could figure out the rest later. Easy!

His second week of refereeing, Tim is alone in the center, surrounded by kids and holding his commemorative silver 1967 Tokyo Olympic coin. “I flip, they call, and the coin landed on edge. It stood there, on edge.  No kidding! I said  ‘Let's do this again’ ...but it was really significant to me.” How fortuitous.

Tim went on to share “I've learned as much about myself as I have about the other various participants in that time - it has been a surprisingly vast experience and quite an interesting journey.”

Owen got his Regional Referee badge in 2017, and took to the craft straight away. It’s been a rewarding experience for father and son to share time working together in a shared passion and something they can continue to share in the future!

The Wrubel’s have plans. Tim is serving as the Regional Referee Administrator and working on his Referee Instructor Certificate. Owen is accruing his community service points and planning to earn his Intermediate Referee badge. And if he chooses, he could even make a nice part time job out of it, much better than flipping burgers!

This Father's Day, we celebrate the Wrubel boys and all the father’s and son’s in our region who are sharing their passion for soccer, building strong relationships and serving our community.

Editor’s note: Each season there are referee and coaching classes across the county where you can learn the skills you need to be a hero to your child and the youth in our community. Go to  https://www.aysou.org to find a class and sign-up today.
